Top coastal towns to visit
Whitby
Whitby is famous for its abbey ruins high on the clifftop, reached by the 199 steps, and for its connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The harbour, the narrow streets and the fish and chips make it a favourite.
Robin Hood’s Bay
A tiny village of steep, cobbled lanes tumbling down to the sea. At low tide the rocky shore is great for rock pooling and fossil hunting.
Scarborough
Yorkshire’s classic seaside resort, with two sandy bays, a lively seafront and Scarborough Castle on the headland between them.
Filey and Flamborough
Filey has a long, quiet sandy beach that’s perfect for families. Nearby Flamborough is all chalk cliffs, coves and seabirds.
How to avoid the crowds
- Visit outside the school holidays if you can. Late spring and early autumn are often quieter, and the weather can still be lovely.
- Go on a weekday rather than at the weekend.
- Arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the beaches and car parks are calmer.
- Explore the smaller villages and coastal paths between the big towns.
Be ready for the weather
The weather on the coast can change quickly, and it’s often breezier and cooler than inland. Pack waterproofs and layers whatever the season, and have a back-up plan for wet days. Whitby’s museums and shops, Scarborough Castle or a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering all work well.
Where to stay
Staying inland gives you the best of both worlds: days at the seaside and quiet evenings in the countryside. Our cottages at Sands Farm, near Pickering, sleep from 2 to 8, and several have hot tubs and are dog friendly. Couples might like Poppy Cottage, with its hot tub and roll-top bath. Families and groups could choose Rose Cottage or The Chapel.
