A Winter Weekend in Ripon: Cathedral, Fountains Abbey and Where to Stay

The ruins of Fountains Abbey near Ripon, North Yorkshire, on a bright day with green lawns in front

Ripon is small enough to explore on foot, which makes it one of the easiest places in Yorkshire for a winter weekend. There’s a cathedral with more than 1,300 years of history, a nightly tradition in the Market Square, and one of the country’s great abbey ruins a short drive away. On a cold, clear day, few places look better. This guide covers how to fill two days, what to pack, and where to stay so everything is close to your door.

Why Ripon works so well in winter

Winter weekends are about making the most of short days. In Ripon the main sights, cafés, pubs and shops sit within a few minutes’ walk of each other, so you spend less time travelling and more time enjoying yourself. You can park once, or arrive without a car, and do the whole weekend on foot.

It’s also a good base for the wider area. The Yorkshire Dales are on the doorstep, and Harrogate and Knaresborough are an easy trip if you fancy a change of scene on Sunday.

Saturday morning: Ripon Cathedral

Start at Ripon Cathedral. Its story goes back more than 1,300 years, and beneath it lies an Anglo-Saxon crypt. Inside, the scale of the building is striking. On a bright winter morning, the low sun through the windows is worth getting up for.

Give yourself an hour or so, and check the cathedral’s own website before you go for service times and anything that might affect visiting. Most of the building is wheelchair accessible, apart from the library and the crypt.

Warm up in the city centre

Afterwards, wander through the streets around the cathedral. Kirkgate is one of Ripon’s most historic and atmospheric streets, with cobbles, independent restaurants, art galleries and wine bars. It’s an easy place to find a coffee and something warm to eat before the afternoon.

Saturday afternoon: Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

Fountains Abbey is the highlight of many visits to Ripon. The ruins were founded in 1132 and, together with the Studley Royal Water Garden, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In winter, with fewer visitors and frost on the grass, the abbey feels especially peaceful.

The site is large, so you could easily spend a few hours there:

  • The abbey ruins: wander the vast stone halls and imagine monastic life here nearly 900 years ago.
  • Studley Royal Water Garden: statues, follies and cascades set around still water, which look beautiful on a crisp day.
  • The deer park: beyond the lake, look out for red, fallow and sika deer among the ancient lime tree avenues.

Winter opening times can be shorter, and some areas may close in bad weather, so check the National Trust website before you set off. Wear boots with a good grip, as paths can be muddy or icy.

Saturday evening: the Hornblower

Be back in the Market Square for 9pm, when the Hornblower sets the watch. This tradition is said to date back over a thousand years, and it takes place every evening. It’s short, free and quite special to watch on a cold night with the square lit up. Then head off for dinner at one of the city’s restaurants or pubs.

Sunday: museums, the racecourse or the Dales

Sunday is yours to shape around the weather and your group.

If it’s wet or very cold

Ripon has a trio of award-winning museums. At the Workhouse Museum, you start at the original gatehouse and see how people lived in a Victorian workhouse. It’s a thought-provoking, very human visit. Check opening days before you go, as museum hours often change in winter.

If it’s bright and dry

Drive out into the Yorkshire Dales for a winter walk with big views, or take a gentle stroll by the river closer to town. Ripon Racecourse, known as Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse, is close by too, though racing is seasonal, so check its fixtures list.

If you fancy a change of scene

Harrogate and Knaresborough are both easy to reach for an afternoon of shopping, tea rooms or a walk by the river. Read our guide to things to do in Ripon for more ideas.

Practical tips for a winter weekend

  • Pack layers: a warm coat, hat, gloves and waterproof boots will see you through cathedral visits and muddy abbey paths alike.
  • Plan around daylight: do outdoor sights like Fountains Abbey in the middle of the day, and save the cathedral, museums and dinner for the darker hours.
  • Check before you travel: opening times for attractions change through the winter, so look at each organiser’s website the week before.
  • Self-catering helps: having your own kitchen and living room means a slow breakfast, a cosy evening in and no rush to leave a hotel room.
  • Arrival: check-in at our homes is from 3pm, and check-out is by 10am.
